Objective I 

  • Construction of 20 demonstration rain water harvesting systems (storage and/or recharge) in rural schools.

52 schools were visited and assessed in Badulla, Mullaithivu, Moneragala and Kilinochchi Districts.

20 schools were selected at Badulla, Kilinochchi, Moneragala and Mullaithivu Districts. A total of 8160 (7587 students and 573 teachers) will have access for clean drinking water through RWH.

19 awareness programs were conducted . 921 teachers and parents were made aware on RWH and its benefits.

  • Construction of 180 Domestic Rain Water Harvesting Systems

Community awareness

Completed 12 awareness programs and 779 (313 males, 466 females) beneficiaries were made aware on RWHS and its benefits.

Domestic RWHS constructions

180 household selections were completed

172 x 8,000 L RWHS constructions were completed, each system consisting of Ferro cement tank, gutters, first flush system, filter and tap.( 60 RWHS in Karamatiya GND ,Thaldena GND,Balagolla GND,Meegahakiula DSD, Arrawatta GND , Ridimaliyada DSD Badulla District , 60 RWHS in Urruppulam GND,Puthumurippu GNDs, Karachchi DSD, Kilinochchi District and 52 RWHS in Pahatharawa GND, Siyambalanduwa DSD, Balaharuva GND , Wallawaya DSD in Moneragala District )

34 O&M training programs were conducted for 122 beneficiaries in Badulla, Mulativu , Kilinochchi and Moneragala District

Household RWHS constructions were completed in Urruppulam Village, Karachchi DSD at Kilinochchi District
Household RWHS constructions were completed Thaldena GND, Meegahakiula DSD at Badulla District

School children RWH and home gardening project at their homes

Conducted 02 home gardening workshops at Badulla and Moneragala Districts, 31 students participated for this program. 22 school students have started growing brinjal, chili, tomato, beans, guava and tapioca plants at their home premises.

100 well water recharge systems

31 separate wells recharge Systems completed at Kilinochchi and Badulla District . 193 persons will be benefits through ground water recharge in terms of quantity and quality .

Set up mobile operation and maintainer’s unit

Trained 13 mason’s (9 male, 4 female) for set up mobile operation and maintenance unit. These trained persons visits to repair and maintain RWHS to villages in Badulla, Kilinochchi and Moneragala Districts.

Objective II

  • Build Capacity of Officials and professionals on Rainwater Harvesting Technology

Establish a pool of technical experts on RWH

E – application was designed to get enrolled the interested professionals for this program. 27 applications received from interested professionals representing 21 organizations. Conducted 8 workshop online ,17 ( 3 female and 14 male ) participated .

Research and Development – Survey of existing RWH systems in other districts

4104 RWHS data was collected and updated the database. The data was received from Moneragala, Badulla, Gampaha, Colombo, Kurunegala, Puttalam, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Hambantota, Matale, Batticaloa, Jaffna, Trincomalee, Ampara, Vavuniya, Mannar , Kandy, Nuwaraeliya, Kurunegala, and Kegalla Districts.

 Networking and Dissemination of Information – Supporting Regional RWH Network

Created and updated a database of SARC organizations involved in RWH. 171 regional organizations are identified. 1st webinar program was conducted and 15 participants participated .

There are 19 RWH interested organizations across Asia have been responded with their 27 willingness to connect with the network.

Badulla Resource centre was declared open in the NWS&DB head office at Badulla District on 16/06/2020.

Moneragala Resource centre was declared open in the NWS&DB regional office at Moneragala District on 01/07/2020.
