Project ObjectiveThis project proposes to popularize RWH in the Chavakachcheri area in Jaffna District through awareness raising, demonstration and trainings.
Project Activities– Conduct a feasibility study on RWH in schools (25) and villages within Chavakkacheri (11 GN divisions) in Jaffna District
– Conduct an awareness program for government and local authority officials on RWH
– Establish 3 demonstrative rain water harvesting systems in schools1. Create awareness on the benefits and technology of rain water harvesting to
School children2. Construct 30,000 liter ferro-cement rainwater harvesting system3. Training on operation and maintenance of the rain water harvesting system- Install 3 mobile weather stations in each school established with the RWHS1. Train students on installing the mobile weather station2. Provide all equipment needed for installing the mobile weather station3. Monitor and supervise the data collection and retrieval

Discussion on Rainwater Harvesting System Implementation Strategies for Yalpanam

World Vision Lanka, RIWASH-3 in collaboration with Lanka Rainwater Harvesting Forum, implemented a project titled Introduction of Rain Water Harvesting (RWH) Systems. As part of the project LRWHF conducted a feasibility study on RWH in schools (08) and villages (11) within Chavakachcheriand Chenkani Divisional Secretariat in Jaffna District.

The outcomes of the study were presented by Dr. Tanuja Ariyananda, Executive Director, LRWHF to government officers and project partners in the district on 25th February 2016 at Tilko Jaffna City Hotel.

Establishment of Rain Water Harvesting Systems and Mobile Low Cost Weather Stations at Yalpanam

Following the feasibility study conducted by Lanka Rain Water Harvesting Forum (LRWHF) supported by World Vision Lanka November – December 2015, 3 schools were selected to implement 30,000 L capacity rain water harvesting systems. They are as;
1. J/ Ponnalai Varatharaja Perumal Vidyasalai
2. J/ Araly Valiammai Memorial Vidyasalai
3. J/ Varrany Karampaikkuruchchi G.T.M.S. Vidyasalai

Furthermore disuse Rain Water Harvesting Tank of 20,000 liter (estimated) at J/Chandra Mouleesa Vidyalaya, Chavakachcheri, constructed by SDC was assesses for repair and restoration.

Out of these 4 schools 3 schools were selected to establish the low cost mobile weather stations and to train the students and teachers on how to operate and maintain the weather stations. They are;

1. J/ Ponnalai Varatharaja Perumal Vidyasalai
2. J/ Araly Valiammai Memorial Vidyasalai
3. J/ Madduvil North Chandramouleesa Vidyasalai

Training Program on Installation of Mobile Weather Stations

Two training programs on “Installation of mobile weather station“ was held on 25th and 26th February 2016 at Chavakachcheri and Chankani Divisional Secretariat area . The training program was attended by 30 students 10 teachers. They were from

1. J/ Ponnalai Varatharaja Perumal Vidyasalai
2. J/ Araly Valiammai Memorial Vidyasalai
3. J/ Madduvil North Chandramouleesa Vidyasalai

The objective of the program was to increase the weather literacy among the next generation of Sri Lankans. The training covered topics such as climate change, meteorological equipment, meteorological data and hands on session how to set up a mobile weather station. All participants were involved in interactive sections in order to get an understanding on equipment and how to set up the weather station. The training program was conducted by Ms. Ama Rajakarunanayake, Communication & IT Administrator, LRWHF.

Handing Over Ceremony of Rain Water Harvesting System RWHSand Low Cost Mobile Weather Station at Chavakachcheri and Chankani

A ceremony to mark the completion repair and restoration of rain water harvesting system and launching of the Mobile weather station in J/Chandra Mouleesa Vidyalaya, Chavakachcheri was held on 25th February 2016. Mr. R. Raveenthiran Secretary of Education, Cultural Affairs, Sports and Youth Affairs Education, North Province, was the chief guest at this occasion. Mr. S. Krishnakumar, Zonal Director of Education, Thenmaradchy. Mr. Jeyald Antony Rasaratnam, Operations Manager, RIWASH-3 Project, World Vision Lanka, Dr. Tanuja Ariyananda, Executive Director, LRWHF, Mr. Sinniah Kukan, Coordinator, World Vision also joined at this occasion. The weather station training program certificates were also distributed at this ceremony.

Another ceremony was held to mark the completion of rain water harvesting system (30,000L) and launching of low cost mobile weather station at J/ Ponnalai Varatharaja Perumal Vidyasalai on 26th February 2016. Mr. S. Santhirarajah, Zonal Director of Education, Valikamam was the chief guest at this occasion and Mr. Jeyald Antony Rasaratnam, Operations Manager, RIWASH-3 Project, World Vision Lanka, Dr. Tanuja Ariyananda, Executive Director, LRWHF, Mr. Alex Roche, Coordinator, World Vision Lanka, Mrs. V. Seyon and Mr. M. Jeyateesavaran Teachers, Araly Valiilammai Memorial Vidyasalai participated at this event. The weather station training program certificates were also distributed at this ceremony.
